Back Carry

Suitable from 4 months onwards, this is a great position for older babies and toddlers. They enjoy riding on your back, and being able to see out, and are still held cosily close to you.

  1. IllustrationPut the body of the sling behind baby's back (baby can be lying on the sling, sitting or standing), bring the shoulder straps under his arms, and hold securely against baby's chest.
  2. IllustrationHolding tightly, place your other hand under his bottom and lift him over your shoulder, so he is lying snugly on your back. Keep using the straps to steady him.
  3. IllustrationKeep a tight grip on the straps (or grip them between your knees to keep the tension, and have both hands free), and with your free hand reach around to bring the waist straps between baby's legs and around your waist, and tie securely.
  4. IllustrationNow take one shoulder strap in each hand, and move them so that one is now over each shoulder. Making sure the straps are tight, and not twisted, pull down firmly and loop each one around the same shoulder, so that it goes back on itself under your arm (like a rucksack).
  5. IllustrationBring the straps over the outside of baby's leg, and cross over on his bottom.
  6. IllustrationPull under the opposite leg, bringing the strap round to your front again. Now you can knot tightly against your stomach. Your baby should be sitting comfortably high up and feel very secure.

NB. If you prefer, you can also tie the waist straps first, the lift baby onto your hip and scoot him around in order to get him on your back.
